My husband and I have been missing traveling during COVID-19 times and were also looking for things to do over the weekends. We decided to do “themed” weekends where we would eat food and watch movies based on a destination we want to visit.
For our first theme, we decided to go with London. We spent a few days in London in 2017, and we are eager to go back when it is safe to travel.
The Food (and drink)
For our first British themed meal, we picked up scones, jam, and clotted cream from Alice’s Tea Cup, an Alice in Wonderland themed restaurant in our neighborhood.
We also, of course, had to experiment with tea. We tried to be as authentic as we could and brought out the beautiful teapot my mother in law got us at Harrod’s in London. There was much English Breakfast consumed in our household.
Of course, we also made fish and chips and ate them with some Strongbow cider.
Our last British-themed meal was bangers and mash. (I mean, how could you go wrong with sausage and mashed potatoes?). Our favorite mashed potatoes recipe is from Chrissy Teigen’s Cravings cookbook. The recipe is full of butter and garlic, so you know it will yield delicious results.
The Entertainment
Of course, there are many great movies and TV shows set in the UK. We spent many hours re-watching season 1 of The Crown as part of our London “adventure.” We also watched the seminal Mary Kate and Ashley classic Winning London. As a massive Winnie the Pooh fan, I also had to watch The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh on Disney+.
We also discovered that several London museums have virtual tours that you can take right now because of the pandemic. We explored The British Museum and The National Gallery through virtual tours on their websites.
Of course, it wasn’t the same as actually getting on a plane and exploring London, but we certainly had fun!
I love your Quarantine Travels updates!
